This weather is GORGEOUS - except for the random snow thrown in! At my house we are soaking up as much outside time as possible. For us, this looks like sidewalk chalk, bike rides, cooking on the grill, bubble blowing, and getting our gardens cleaned out and prepped for planting. That last part got my girls so excited to start planting things that I needed to do something to appease their garden growing appetites until it gets a little closer to May. As a preschool teacher, my first thought was pinterest. There is more than enough fun activities, but the one that stuck out to me as the fastest results and the most hands on for the kids was this one!
We had everything on hand so we got right to work. We added a few rocks to the bottom of our clear plastic cups, then soil, and finally a layer of grass seed. My girls watered them and then just watched. Once they lost interest, I pasted on a picture to each and set them in the window. They checked their "pots" every day, multiple times. It is a good thing that grass seed grows so quickly because they didn't need to wait long for some sprouts to poke through! Within a week their heads were growing some pretty thick hair. By the two week mark, they were ready for haircuts! The girls grabbed scissors and got to work. We talked about how if we cut into the soil we would cut the roots (which we could see so it was easy to understand) and the grass would stop growing. My youngest had to test this theory and found it to be totally true by the bald spot her pot now sports. every few days they snip a little grass. It has been so much fun that they have decided we need some bigger pots. This weekend, we will take our project outside and plant some big pots with some pretty grasses and they will get to tend to their own grass garden!
Maybe this will be something fun for you to do with your preschooler too!
